BlackBerry is apparently preparing to roll out a new version of its BB10 operating system later this month that will allow users of its smartphones to seamlessly run Android apps in addition to those downloaded from the BlackBerry World store.
A new report on BlackBerry news site CrackBerrypredicts the new BlackBerry 10.2.1 update will debut on 28 January.
The BlackBerry 10.2.1 OS is seen of particular significance for the troubled Canadian smartphone maker as it will apparently allow Android apps to be run natively on its handsets. All BlackBerry users will need to do after loading the new OS is to download standard Android APK app files and run them as they would code written specifically for BlackBerry. This move aims to address a lingering gripe among BlackBerry users that the BlackBerry World app store is very poorly stocked compared with Google Play and the Apple App Store.
There has been "plenty of speculation" surrounding possible release dates for the operating system upgrade. As far back as June of 2013, mid-January was tipped for the release time frame for 10.2.1. An additional maintenance was believed to be in development for release of in June 2014.
The site reported there is "plenty of evidence mounting" that the release is not that far off. "There are developer events scheduled for near the end of January to show off 10.2.1, some carriers have already suggested January, the recent leak of OS 10.2.1.1925 has oddly been updated with new files and resigned as of January 8th, the developer version of the 10.2.1 OS is available for download and now multiple sources are claiming January 28th as the release date in regions such as EMEA and APAC while others are claiming that it will be a 'Global' roll out," CrackBerry
