Whenever your Chromecast is hooked up to your TV and you’re not actually using it, you may have noticed your Chromecast will cycle through beautiful fullscreen photographs, turning your TV into a digital picture frame. Wouldn’t it be great if you could take advantage of that feature and easily display pictures of your own? Thanks to an update rolling out to the Chromecast app today, you finally can.
Called Backdrop, Google originally announced the ability to change the source of images on your Chromecast’s idle screen back at Google I/O. So we’ve been waiting for this feature to finally roll out for some time now. Now that the update enabling a custom backdrop is finally here, here’s how it works: all you have to do is go into the menu in the Chromecast app, select Backdrop, and from there you’ll be able to choose what kinds of photos are shown and from what sources. Backdrop sources include:
- Your favorite photo albums from Google+
- Amazing artwork from galleries and museums around the world via the Google Cultural Institute
- News and lifestyle images from The New York Times, The Guardian, Saveur and more (U.S. only)
- Satellite imagery of some of the hardest-to-reach places on Earth from Google Maps
- And even more beautiful photos from the Google+ community
