Google Nexus 5 battery drain camera bug fix in the works

Google Nexus 5 battery drain camera bug fix in the works
Google has confirmed that a flaw exists in the camera software on its Nexus 5 smartphone, and potentially other devices running a stock version of Android 4.4 KitKat, which causes the handset to get extremely warm and the battery to discharge - but says a fix is now in the works.Users have been reporting issues of overheating handsets and poor battery life to Google following the release of Android 4.4.2 KitKat, with the majority running the software on the company's flagship Nexus 5 handset. The company has confirmed the problem, suggesting it relates to the driver for the smartphone's cameras gobbling up more CPU time than it should and continuing to run in the background even when the camera application is not loaded.Although Google is holding its hand up to the bug itself, the company believes the more recent spike in reports from users is the result of a third-party change. "There's been a significant increase in the frequency of reported problems. These may be related to a recent update to Skype, which seems to access the camera regularly from its background service in some way that triggers this bug," the company explained in a statement to users. "Investigating this, we've identified a few additional fixes that we hope resolve this issue for good. However, since the high CPU usage is an intermittent problem, we're continuing to test our fixes to verify the problems are gone."We believe we have fixes for the current high CPU reports on N5 due to mm-qcamera-daemon, and they will be included in the next maintenance update," the company added before warning that said update will apply to the Nexus 5 only. "I'd also like to note that instances of high CPU use of mm-qcamera-daemon on other devices besides the N5 need to be reported to their manufacturers - while those devices also use a Qualcomm chip for their camera processing (and thus have a mm-qcamera-daemon process), each has differences in their software and issues with them do not necessarily mean the N5 has the same problem, and vice versa."

Sony Xperia Z Ultra receiving Android 4.4.2 KitKat OTA update

Sony Xperia Z Ultra receiving Android 4.4.2 KitKat OTA update

Sony has begun rolling out the latest Android 4.4 KitKat firmware update to its Xperia Z Ultrasmartphone, starting with owners in Hong Kong.A larger-screen alternative to the Xperia Z andXperia Z1, the Xperia Z Ultra has many of the same stand-out features of its more compact brother - including sealed design which lets the handset survive submersion in up to a metre of clean water for up to half an hour without ill-effect. Despite some initial concerns with screen issues, the handset has proven popular. However, it remains on an older version of Google's Android software, overlaid with Sony's custom user interface.Sony has yet to formally confirm an official launch date for the new firmware, but users on the XDA Developers forum have reported that Hong Kong-based owners have begun to receive a firmware update which brings the Xperia Z Ultra to Android 4.4.2 KitKat, the latest version available from Google. Retaining the custom user interface and Sony-specific software of earlier versions with minor improvements, the new firmware will boost performance, provide faster multitasking, a true full-screen mode in supported apps and integrated support for various cloud storage providers. The Hong Kong roll-out will likely prove the vanguard of an international release, with Sony currently remaining silent on when Xperia Z Ultra customers in other countries can expect to see a similar update.

Apple iOS 7.1 update officially released with CarPlay support

Apple iOS 7.1 update officially released with CarPlay support
Originally predicted to arrive in time for SXSWthen later debunked, Apple has at last released the final version of its iOS 7.1 update for its mobile devices. The update to iOS 7, which has been in development for months and in beta since November, brings a whole host of stability improvements, security fixes and UI tweaks to Apple's iPhoneiPadiPod Touch and Apple TV products. Although Apple hasn't explicitly mentioned so, it is believed the update carries a fix for the TouchID Fade bug experienced by some iPhone 5s owners. It also fixes the reboot loop issue we originally reported in January.Visual changes can be seen in the phone dialler app, which now has rounded UI elements to match other areas of iOS. The Music app now gives the shuffle and repeat buttons more prominence, and the shift and delete keyboard keys should be a little easier to use. Finally, it's now more obvious how to disable wallpaper motion, for anyone that was getting motion sickness from the constantly moving background images.iOS 7.1 also adds support for the recently announced CarPlay feature, which puts familiar iOS apps and services on your car dashboard. Despite the fact there are currently no cars on the market to support CarPlay, last week's Geneva motor show saw several manufacturers including Volvo, Honda and Jaguar pledge to introduce CarPlay-enabled vehicles in 2014 and beyond. If you own an iOS device and want to upgrade, you'll need a whopping 1.9GB of free space in order to make room for the update. We'll be trying it out on a range of devices overnight to see whether the new OS makes any major performance differences.

Nokia X available in India today, X+ and XL coming soon

Nokia just announced the availability of its first Android-powered product, the Nokia X, in India. India used to be a stronghold for Nokia but recently cheap Android-powered devices have been growing fast and eating into its share.

The dual-SIM Nokia X is available today at INR 8,600 ($140 / €100) from Nokia's official store. For comparison, a Nokia Lumia 520 – by far the most popular Windows Phone handset – costs INR 7,700.
The Lumia 520 is highly popular for a reason – Androids in its price range are nowhere near its specs. The Nokia X is no monster either but you get the same free offline navigation from HERE Maps.

Nokia X+ is also up on Nokia's India store but it's listed as "coming soon" and there's no price yet. The X+ and the 5" XL model should launch within a couple of months in the country.

Apple iOS 7.1 now seeding to iDevices, CarPlay in tow

As expected, Apple has released iOS 7.1 update for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

The user interface changes are most noticeable and include tweaks to the phone dialer and the power off area, where Apple has opted for round UI elements. Additionally, the accept and decline buttons in the incoming call have also been tweaked, along with the repeat and shuffle icons in the Music player.
Under iOS 7.1 user can also disable the parallax effect when selecting a custom image for a wallpaper. There are additional minor improvements to the keyboard with the delete and shift keys coming out more prominent now.
Apple has fixed the random reboots bug, which many have been experience. Hopefully, the problem is now gone for good.
The iOS 7.1 update also includes support for the company's new CarPlay feature, which allows you to access your phone through your car via voice commands. Siri is at the core of this feature and allows drivers to dictate messages or manage their music without ever touching their iPhone.
Speaking of music, iTunes Radio is also updated in iOS 7.1. The new additions are featured station search, quickly create stations based on previous searches as well as quick iTunes Match subscription directly from the phone.
