Red Nexus 5 leaks again, this time in press image form

rednexus5aam

Just in case you weren’t going to survive until the red Nexus 5′s purported Feb. 4 launchwithout getting another peek at the device, the rumor mill is happy to whet your appetite.A new press image of the crimson-hued N5 has been posted by @evleaks, giving us our clearest look at the phone yet. As expected, the red Nexus 5 is pretty similar to the white Nexus 5, but it’s just red instead of white. The rear and sides of the device are covered in red paint, as is the earpiece resting above its display. The red Nexus 5 has gone from non-existent to heavily-leaked in the span of just a few days. First we got a peek at the device’s packaging and the phone itself in the wild, and then yesterday an image of Sprint’s internal systems showed that the red N5 could be slated to hit the Google Play Store’s virtual shelves as soon as Feb. 4. That’s next Tuesday for those that are curious. We’ve yet to get any details on how much the red Nexus 5 will cost when it does arrive, but it seems likely that it’ll be priced in a manner similar to that of the black and white Nexus 5s. Those devices are currently selling for $349 or $399, depending on whether you want 16GB or 32GB of built-in storage. So now that we’ve gotten a clear look at the red Nexus 5, who’s planning on buying a unit next week?

Sprint HTC One Android 4.4.2 update available for manual pull

htc-one-silver-back-630

Looks like HTC One owners in the Great White North aren’t the only ones enjoying a KitKat treat this weekend.Sprint recently announced that the Android 4.4.2 update for its version of the HTC One is now available for customer initiated request ahead of the network rollout that’s scheduled to begin on Feb. 11. Several Sprint One owners are reporting that they’ve successfully downloaded the update, which brings with it a bump to Android 4.4.2 and HTC’s Sense 5.5 overlay, as well as security enhancements, Cloud Print Service support and more Bluetooth profiles for additional media interactions. There were likely quite a few disappointed One owners after HTC’s recent announcement that it would miss its self-imposed end of January deadline for updating the U.S. carrier-branded versions of the One to KitKat. That delay turns out to be have been nearly non-existent for Sprint One users, though, and hopefully this is a sign that the updates for the other One models aren’t too far off.In order to manually check for an update on the Sprint HTC One, grab your device and head into Settings > System updates > HTC software update > Check now. The update is a beefy one, weighing in at 535.78MB, but the time it takes to download and install it will seem worth it once you’re running Android 4.4.2 on your Sprint One before all of your One-toting friends. After you’ve successfully installed the Android 4.4.2 update on your Sprint HTC One, be sure to stop by the comments section to let us know how it’s working for you!

HTC One for Sprint gets its KitKat update a little early

HTC One for Sprint
HTC must feel that it's best to underpromise and overdeliver. While the company told American One owners that they wouldn't get KitKat on time, the 535MB Android upgrade is already available on Sprint; eager subscribers just have to check for an update to start downloading. More patient types can wait until February 11th, when the carrier will begin pushing the OS to all users. There's no word of an accelerated launch on other US networks, so Sprint customers may be sitting pretty for the next couple of weeks.
[Thanks, Mike]

Sony Xperia Z1 Compact review: a good thing in a small(ish) package

Last year, Sony finally reached the end of the alphabet with its Xperia Z. It wasn't just that the company ran out of letters, though: With the Xperia Z, we saw Sony streamline its scattered phone strategy, piping all its attention into a single high-end device. Then, it followed up with the Z1, which brought a massive 20.7-megapixel camera.Today, we once again have a new phone to talk about, except it's perhaps not the device you might have been expecting. Nope, this isn't a Z2, and no it doesn't bring an even higher-resolution camera. Instead, Sony's joining the small-flagship club, with the Xperia Z1 Compact. Interestingly, unlike some of its rivals, Sony is promising that you won't have to compromise on features for the sake of a more pocket-friendly handset. At £440 SIM-free in the UK, that apparently includes a no-compromise price, too. By the looks of it, though, Sony has worked hard to stick with the same specs as the original -- bar, of course, the screen size. So, is this finally proof that "mini" doesn't have to mean mediocre? We put it to the test to find out.
