Samsung Galaxy S5 to be 'dust and water' proof, include fingerprint sensor

With only a week to go until Samsung is expected to unveil the Galaxy S5 smartphone, the latest set of leaked reports suggest it will be far more ruggedised than its predecessor and include biometric security.
According to anonymous sources speaking to ZDnet Korea, the Galaxy S5 will be both dust- and water-proof. Unlike the Galaxy S4, which only had these extra protections for the Galaxy S4 Active variant, the Galaxy S5 will include them on the standard model.

The Galaxy S4 Active was thicker and more industrial than the S4
Quite how Samsung will pull this off (or indeed whether the rumour is true at all) remains to be seen - the S4 Active was larger, thicker and more industrial-looking than the basic S4, so hopefully the company has managed to add extra protection without increasing the bulk of the handset. Sony has already made waterproofing an integral part of its smartphone range with the Xperia Z and Xperia Z1, and is expected to follow suit with the rumoured Xperia Z2, but other manufacturers haven't yet followed suit. Samsung would be the first, giving Sony one less unique feature to differentiate its phones.
According to the unnamed source, the Galaxy S5 will also include a fingerprint sensor built into the home button for biometric security. Rather than hold a finger or thumb on the button like the TouchID sensor on Apple's iPhone 5s, users would swipe a digit across the button to unlock the handset.
How accurate these rumours are remains to be seen, and should be treated with suspicion as the source refused to be named. However, with Samsung's Unpacked 5 event now less than a week away, we won't have long to wait to find out.
