5 killer ways to find wallpapers that make your Android device yours

One of the things that makes Android a truly beautiful platform is customization. I’m not talking about custom ROMs or root mods; I’m talking about how no other major mobile platform out there lets you customize your device the way Android does. There may be some caveats, but you have the ability to make your Android device completely unique. My wife hates using my Nexus 5 because it’s so different than her Galaxy S4. Maybe that’s a bad thing, I’m not sure. But what I do know is that I have my Nexus 5 set up exactly the way I want it and I love it. I think my home screen looks awesome, and not only is it super functional, it’s also fun to use. The beauty is that I can change it tomorrow if I get a new idea. My home screen isn’t going to look like everyone else’s iPhone (although I could make it look like iOS if I wanted) or Windows Phone; my device looks like no one else’s because it’s Android. This is the third post of a recurring series about making your Android device yours. Today I’m going to cover some of my personal secrets in regards to finding killer wallpapers. My goal here is to offer customization ideas that will work for all Android devices, whether you’re still running Gingerbread or you’re on the latest version of Android, Kit Kat. You don’t need to be rooted. You don’t need to be running a custom ROM. All you need is a little bit of time and an itch to change things up a bit. If that sounds like you, read on my friend. We’re going to have fun diving into the world of customization and making your device truly unique.Last week we covered some really cool custom icon packs. Wallpapers are a very important complement to icon packs, and for me, they have a large effect on how my homescreen is organized. I think wallpapers are an easy way to put your personality/interests/nerdiness on display, and it’s really fun to have some good resources for finding the right one. So without further ado, here are my wallpaper finding pro tips:

Screenshot_2013-12-30-22-18-56_gtenexus520131230_2219221) Apps

This may be an obvious answer, but sometimes obvious answers are the best. Also, there are so many dang apps out there (I’m not complaining) that sometimes it’s hard to find the really good and useful ones. One of my personal favorites is 500 Firepaper by the world famous Android developer chainfire. 500 Firepaper allows you to automatically rotate through popular images from 500px right on your homescreen, You have tons of control regarding what kinds of images you can get on your homescreen and how often. You can get some beautiful images on there, and it’s always changing which is super fun.
A similar brand new app that will rotate classic art on your homescreen is Muzei. Other honorable mentions are Minimal Wallpapers (which has tons of walls from simpledesktops.com), Fuzz,Zedge and Wallbase. I’m sure there are a ton more, so be sure to let us know what wallpaper apps you’re using if I didn’t mention yours.

2) Icon packs

The themers out there that are hooking us up with beautiful icon packs do us a huge favor and typically combine wallpapers along with their icon packs. I’d say the majority of the wallpapers I end up using on my devices are from icon packs. Most of the time they’re very simple and complement the themer’s beautiful icon theming work. With their powers combined your homescreen can look awesome. For example, Stark by kovdev has some of my favorite wallpapers that I use all the time.

3) Google image search

Using Google image search is a great way to get wallpapers tailor made for your device. You don’t *need* to have images that are the exact resolution of your display, but if you want to guarantee that the whole image will fit well on your homescreen, this is a great way to do it. Look up your device’s screen resolution (The Nexus 5′s is 1920 x 1080), go to Google’s image search, click on Search Tools > Size > Exactly… > and enter your resolution. Then, search whatever you’re interested in like flowers, androids, cars, dinosaurs, whatever. You can find walls that look and fit great on your device.

4) Google+ communities

Google+ communities like Android Wallpapers are an awesome way to find and share great wallpapers. I don’t have much else to add regarding this wall finding method. It’s a community. We work together to make our Android devices awesome. You can join and contribute and make the Android community more awesome.

5) Take awesome pics

Last, this isn’t really a method to find wallpapers, but to create them. Take lots of pictures and/or follow people who take awesome pictures. It’s the best way to get original and meaningful content on your homescreen. If you don’t think you can take your own pretty pictures, follow someone like Romain Guy.
So, where do you get your wallpapers? Which ones are you sporting on your device? There are probably lots of other great ways or apps to find wallpapers. If I’ve left out something that you feel is worth mentioning, please comment below and let us know what you’re using and why you think it’s awesome. You can also use the HTML <img> tag and show us your homescreen. We’ll continue to share other wallpapers in the future. Thanks for reading, and don’t forget to let us know what topic you’d like to see covered in an upcoming edition of “Make your Android device yours.”

Sony D6503 ‘Sirius’ laid out next to Xperia Z1, Z in leaked photo

Sony’s D6503 “Sirius” kind of fell off the radar after appearing in a couple of leaks last month, but thankfully it’s back again today. Some new images of the Sony Sirius have popped up on Chinese forum Digi-Wo that show the unannounced Xperia smartphone lounging around in the wild. The first photo shows the Sirius next to a couple of other Sony flagships, the Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z. The Sirius is just a hair taller than the other two, likely due to its larger display that’s expected to measure 5.2 inches. (The other two have 5-inch screens.)
sonysiriuscolorsaam
The second image gives us a glimpse at both the black and white versions of the Sirius. The latter of the two features a white outer edge and black front, giving it a panda-like design similar to the white Nexus 5.These latest shots reaffirm that the Sirius will feature the Omnibalance design that Sony has utilized for several of its recent Xperia smartphones. That Omnibalance frame is expected to house a quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and 3GB of RAM. To compare, the Xperia Z1 sports a Snapdragon 800 CPU and 2GB of RAM. We’re still missing a few other important Sirius spec details, including its battery size and internal storage, but so far it sounds like a respectable successor to the Z1.The source of today’s leak claims that Sony is planning to launch the D6503 Sirius in April. Here’s to hoping that that’s the case, because both HTC and Samsung are expected to introduce their 2014 flagship Android phones in the next month or two, and so Sony needs to get the Sirius on shelves as close as it can to those other devices so that shoppers will at least consider picking it up when hunting for a new handset. What do you think of the Sony D6503 Sirius so far? Do you plan on checking it out whenever it arrives in stores?

LG G Pro 2 phablet officially launched ahead of MWC

LG has officially revealed the G Pro 2 phablet ahead of the Mobile World Congress show later this month. We knew it was coming with a series of high profile leaks revealing its existence, but it came as a surprise when the company announced it officially last night in its native South Korea.
The G Pro 2 will replace the G Pro as LG's flagship phablet handset, with a 5.9in, 1080p Full HD display. It uses IPS LCD technology, as opposed to the AMOLED screens found in Samsung's Galaxy Note 3. According to LG, the handset has an "industry-leading" ratio of screen to bezel of 77.2%.
LG G Pro 2
Inside, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset runs at 2.26GHz and is paired with 3GB of RAM. There will be two variants with either 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, but both will have a microSD card slot for adding extra capacity. A huge 3,200mAh battery should keep the handset juiced for at least a full day of use.
On the back, a 13-megapixel camera with optical image stabilisation sits above LG's familiar rear-facing power and volume keys, last seen on the G2 and teased for inclusion on the G2 Mini. According to LG, the camera will be able to record 4K and 120fps 1080p video for slow motion capture, and will also come with a 'magic focus' mode that will let users change the point of focus after taking a photo. This will be software-powered, rather than use dedicated hardware like the Lytro light field camera.
LG has yet to announce availability or pricing outside of Korea, but has confirmed it will be making an appearance at the company's Mobile World Congress booth in two weeks' time. Hopefully that's when we'll learn whether it will be headed to the UK, and what it will set you back.

Nokia Lumia 1320 UK release date confirmed: get a WP8 phablet on the 24th of February

Nokia Lumia 1320 UK release date confirmed: get a WP8 phablet on the 24th of February

Nokia has confirmed it will be bringing its Lumia 1320 phablet to the UK on the 24th of February, meaning anyone eager to get hold of a 6in Windows Phone 8 device won't have to rely on imports or third-party retailers.
The Lumia 1320 has been on sale in the US and other countries for some time, but will finally arrive in the UK next month. It has a 6in, 1280x720 resolution display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor running at 1.7GHz and 1GB of RAM. 8GB of internal storage, microSD card support and a 5-megapixel rear camera are also included, as is an LTE modem for compatibility with the UK's 4G mobile networks.
Until now, only third party retailers had confirmed they would be stocking the Windows Phone 8-powered device for UK customers; Mobiles.co.uk had the handset listed for free on contracts starting at £17 a month, while Unlocked-Mobileshad a provisional SIM-free pre-order price of £294.98.
Now that Nokia has confirmed the UK will receive the Lumia 1320, expect it to crop up in all the usual retail outlets including the Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4 U, as well as on contract from the likes of Virgin Mobile and EE.
"We are building on the continued success of the Lumia range by looking to offer the latest Windows Phone in a large-screen smartphone format at a highly competitive price,' Conor Pierce, Nokia's UK & Ireland Vice President, said of the launch. "The Nokia Lumia 1320 brings a cost effective addition to our large screen Windows Phone portfolio.”

Pink and Black Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 now available in India

Not a fan of white paint jobs on cell phones, but have you had your eyes on the Galaxy Grand 2? Well if you're in India, then you're in luck, Samsung has launched the phone in Pink and Black variants. Check out the gallery of images below.

You can buy the Black version right now, but if you wanted to rock a pink Android handset, then you're going to have to wait a little while longer, as it's not yet available.
The Grand 2 retails for $365, and improves upon the original Grand in a lot of ways.
Here's a recap of the phone's specs: you'll get a 5.25” HD display, 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, 1.5GB RAM, 8GB internal storage with a microSD card slot, a 2,600 mAh battery, 8MP primary camera with a 1.9MP front-facing unit, 3G connectivity and Bluetooth 4.0. The Grand 2 is also a dual-sim phone, and this is where most of the devices appeal lies.
